Unfortunately, studies and records show that eczema, particularly in babies and children, is becoming a more common and widespread problem. The good news is that it’s not always a life-long affliction for kids (they often outgrow it by 5 years old), but it’s still painful and frustrating to treat as a parent (and no picnic for your wee one, either).
Many cases remain of undetermined origin, but there are some environmental and genetic variables that can play a part:
• Skin too dry (dehydrated or not enough natural oils, excessive sweating)
• Exposure to physical allergens and irritants
• Plain old bad luck (genetics)
In babies and young children, eczema shows up initially as red or swollen—sometimes pebbly or rough—skin, especially in skin folds that tend to stay damp: armpits, behind the knees, and in the groin area. Sometimes there are blisters or raised red bumps, and sometimes the scratching and dryness can get so bad the skin cracks and leaves open sores. Fussy, irritable babies with tender skin who dislike bath time might have a problem with eczema.
Treatment invariably depends on the cause, which is not always obvious. Please consult your pediatrician or a dermatologist in order to get direction on the proper course of treatment.Your doctor will evaluate your kiddo, and ask a lot of questions about his or her environment. Why? If your child’s skin reacts to the laundry detergent you use, resolving the issue could be as simple as switching brands or going to a “free and clear” version. Children’s skin often responds to diet changes as well; removing things like dairy, nuts or soy can improve eczema symptoms a surprising amount. There are lotions and creams, acupuncture and other homeopathic treatments, and even UV light treatments. Here are the biggies:
• Filter your child’s bath water (I can personally attest that this does help, as I have adult eczema, and it helps me!)
• Change laundry detergent, and dress your wee babe in 100% cotton clothing to allow the skin to breathe
• Perform an allergy test and identify possible contact or internal allergens (we’re looking at you, cow’s milk!)
• Remove certain Big Allergens from your kid’s diet (or stop eating them yourself, if you’re breastfeeding): cow’s milk, soy, nuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, and wheat
• Try keep your baby in a warm (not hot!), dry environment to minimize sweating (sorry, fellow Texans, you will fail this one)
• Try OTC hydrocortisone cream (though I’m not a huge fan of chemicals)
Those are just some of the remedies available. There are a lot of them out there on the web, but please be careful when trying them out! Always test first on yourself, and if there’s no reaction, a small part of your baby (with something handy to wipe/remove the solution if it’s not well received).

Being a parent is a huge responsibility, but it is one of the most rewarding things we can do in our lifetime. Toxins in drinking water are a primary concern for many parents. They don’t want to expose their newborns to dangerous substances in the water. Drinking plain water isn’t something that is typical of infants. Yet when you prepare juice, cereal, or formula you will need to use tap water.
One of the most common contaminants in drinking water that can pose a threat to newborns is lead. It isn’t always possible for a woman to offer breast milk or to buy ready-made formula. When the powder type has to be used, then it is essential for quality drinking water that is free from toxins to be used to mix it. If there is lead contamination in your drinking water, that poses a threat to the health of your infant when you use that water to prepare her formula.
Don’t assume that bottled water is the way to go, either. Many parents use it for mixing baby formula. Unfortunately, the marketing of bottled water gives us the false impression that it is pure. However, independent testing frequently shows bottled water contains the same contaminants as can be found in tap water.
One way that parents of newborns can protect their child from toxins in drinking water is to boil it. This should be done in a pot for at least 20 minutes before mixing it with the formula. Make sure that the water has cooled before giving the baby the formula. You never want to risk the baby being burned.
A baby needs to maintain a healthy immune system so it can thrive. As a child gets older, he or she will consume more formula. That means more water will be consumed, so it has to be purified. The exposure to various chemicals that might be in your tap water can significantly reduce the chances of them developing healthy teeth and gums.
Many children are diagnosed with serious health problems while in infancy. There are studies that indicate that these problems could be due to toxins in drinking water. There isn’t a parent in the world that wants to see such an outcome for their children. Increased numbers of infants are being diagnosed with heart problems, circulatory problems, central nervous system disorders, and even cancer so we all need to take extra precautions.
Do everything you can to prevent toxins in drinking water from affecting your newborn. Your entire family can be adversely affected due to various toxins in drinking water. A home filtering system is essential in order for you to be able to ensure that such forms of contamination cannot adversely affect anyone in your family.
Such a filtering system can remove from 90% to 99% of the contaminants in the tap water. If you want to be extra cautious, you can use a reliable water filter system and boil the water. Do all within your power to give your baby a great start for a healthy life. The quality of the water you give to your infant can have a significant impact, giving that child a good start on a happy and productive life.
When you are expecting a baby, you can expect your life to change in many ways. Aside from the additional weight you will be carrying around, you will need to make changes in order to accommodate the health of the child growing inside you. Changes in lifestyle are necessary for your body to change along with your growing child. Remember that the child in you demands a lot from you and you must be ready to give it.
The body naturally needs water for all of its different bodily functions. By drinking the required 8 glasses of water a day, many illnesses, pregnancy symptoms, and discomforts can be avoided or minimized. The need for plenty of healthy water can easily be overlooked or forgotten, but once you are pregnant, you cannot afford to do any less. Pregnant women need to drink 8 glasses of water a day or more. These should be consumed throughout the day, in between meals, and not all in one sitting. It is essential that pregnant women avoid becoming dehydrated.
You must remember that dehydration is not the same as being thirsty. Actually, dehydration happens long before you feel thirst, because once you are thirsty, it means that you have been dehydrated for a while already. While dehydration in an average person is unhealthy, dehydration in a pregnant woman is dangerous, both for the mom and the baby. Water is needed to transport nutrients through the blood from the mother to the baby. Pregnant women tend to store extra water in their body, so drinking more water helps flush that out. Urinary tract infections are common in expecting mothers, and water helps prevent that.
Dehydration during pregnancy is serious. In the third trimester, the mother’s blood volume increases. Thicker blood can lead to hypertension and other cardiovascular problems. Drinking more water than the required 8 glasses a day during the third trimester helps avoid these problems.
Also in the third trimester, dehydration can cause contractions and eventually premature labor, which is something mothers do not usually want for their child. Premature labor makes it harder for the child to survive, but drinking water can prevent premature labor from happening. Other benefits of proper hydration during pregnancy include better bowel movement, less acne, healthier skin, flushing away of excess sodium, less chance of miscarriage, and prevention of nausea or morning sickness.
Pregnant women must not only stay hydrated, but they should drink clean and healthy water during pregnancy. Below are just a few of the contaminants found in tap water and how they can affect the unborn baby you are carrying:
· Chlorine – Miscarriages and other problems
· Nitrates – Blue Baby Syndrome
· Lead – Slows mental development
· Pharmaceutical drugs – Effects growth and development
It is clear that it is important to be intentional about drinking the required amount of water for the health of the child and the mother. Also, the mother must have healthy drinking water during pregnancy that is free of dangerous water contamination. This is easily provided by using water filters by Aquasana. These filters ensure you that no contaminants will be allowed in your water. Your safety and the safety of your precious child is a top concern and Aquasana can be your partner in making sure the water that comes out of your tap is healthy for mom and baby alike.
If your family uses a lot of bottled water, you are well aware of the costs. You may also be aware that bottled water is often full of water contamination and that the bottles represent a serious environmental problem. It is one challenge to give up the bottled water challenge yourself but if you have children, getting them to switch to filtered water that you make at home is a bigger job. Kids and teenagers in particular seem to just love buying and throwing away bottles of water. So how do you convince them?
If there is one thing that kids like even more than bottled water, it is the internet. So use their love of blogs and videos to get the word out to them that the bottled water habit must go. You can direct them to blogs that discuss how bottled water is the same as tap water. That alone is a compelling argument.
Kids are also environmentally conscious. So blogs that discuss good reasons to give up bottled water to save the earth are very convincing too. By also directing their attention to a few videos outlining why bottled water is bad for everyone, you are using the tools teenagers understand to give them to kick the habit and save you a lot of money leaving bottled water where it belongs which is on the shelves at the store.
It is really upsetting that government water purity standards are so low. Sadly, most people don’t realize the problem. They continue to drink the water that comes out of the tap without filtering it. Others have heard about the problems so they changed to only drinking bottled water. However, the government is even less strict about water purity standards for the bottled water industry. So, in terms of drinking healthy and uncontaminated water, bottled water is not the answer.
Part of the problem is that the types of contaminants as well as the levels of them change in our environment. The procedures used at water treatment facilities are complex and often have many stages. They are set up to remove certain things from the drinking water. It is unrealistic, however, to think that they can remove everything.
You also have to remember that there are good things in our drinking water, including calcium and potassium. These natural minerals in water are good for us and it is important for your health that they remain in the water that you drink. There are numerous types of water filtration that seek to remove additional forms of contamination but at the same time, these water filtration systems can compromise these minerals. It can be a tough call to decide what stays and what goes. It can also be tough to say what safe levels of toxins in our drinking water are and what is too high.
The fact that the number of cases of cancer continues to rise is a concern. Studies have suggested that the cause of this dramatic public health problem could be due to free radicals that get into the drinking water. Most of us drink water because it is good for us. We also give it to our children and our pets. However, it is possible those efforts aren’t good for you when you consider the low government water purity standards that are currently in place.
In many cases the government does agree that changes need to be made. Yet it is a complex process to find out how introducing a new process will work overall for the quality of public drinking water. There is also the cost involved with changing the process and adding or modifying water treatment plants. The price is usually more than $100 million per plant.
When there seems to be troubled economic times going on around the world, many issues like government water purity standards continue to get pushed to a back burner. Most people agree these issues are important but time and funds are not available to deal with them at this point in time.
Since the government water purity standards aren’t high enough, it is important to be part of an advocate group for clean water. Get involved so that the message to our leaders is loud and clear. Let them know you want to have stricter guidelines in place when it comes to the quality of the water your family is consuming.
Such efforts are going to take time to get moved forward and for action to be taken. However, there are steps you can take right now to ensure your family is drinking safer water. One of the most effective and affordable methods is to get a water filtering system from Aquasana. They are a leader in this industry with products that can help you feel better about the current drinking water situation in your home and for your family. While that will not cure the bigger problem of water purity standards nationally, a home water filter system from Aquasana can give you reliable, clean, and healthy water at home. That is a good start.
You are probably familiar with chlorine as a substance used as a water disinfectant. It is one of the most common water disinfectants used by local municipal water treatment systems because it is cheap and fairly effective. However, this widely used chemical is reported to cause serious health problems, especially in pregnant women.
The chemical byproducts that come from chlorinated water can be too much for pregnant women to bear. While chlorine fights bacteria in water, it can form chloroform or other similar compounds if it is used on water with organic elements such as farm and yard debris. Compounds like chloroform are the culprits of illnesses caused by contaminated drinking water. A pregnant woman should not be exposed to high concentrations of such compounds.
These compounds can cause really bad effects for an expecting mother and her unborn child. Drinking water with chlorine byproducts in it can cause birth defects, miscarriage, neural tube defects, and reduced fetal growth. Obviously, you wouldn’t want this for anyone. The fact that pregnant women are required to drink more water than an average person puts them at a greater risk of contracting illnesses from chlorinated water. Also, their lowered immune system while pregnant causes them to be more susceptible to such severe harm, not just for themselves but also for the developing child.
Because natural bodies of water and other water reservoirs are contaminated with algae, animal waste, sewage, and sediment, the government has ordered water plants to use chlorine as a cleansing agent, thus putting expectant mothers and their unborn children at risk.
More and more research groups and environmental advocates are conducting intensive studies on the link between chlorinated water and birth defects. This has resulted in discussions about setting a new limit on chlorine byproducts in water. They have discovered that since 1995, more than 11 million people have used water with chlorine byproducts above the new proposed limit for 12 months in a row or longer. To address this problem, more money is needed for research into better forms of water filtration in municipal systems so that they could use alternative forms of filtering water that are safer than the cheaper chlorine.
This is something that will not change overnight. More research and legal action is needed before necessary changes can be made to the system to deal with the problems of contaminated drinking water. While this is going on, you must not leave your health or the health of your children in anyone else’s hands. Take the necessary steps to ensure that the water you use has no chlorine byproducts. Switch to quality water filters such as those from Aquasana to immediately to protect your family from the risk of getting sick. Aquasana water filters do not use chlorine. Instead, they use more sophisticated technology to clean your water and give you only clean, healthy and good-tasting water that has been filtered to eliminate chemicals or any additives. Even your child will thank you for it.
It is no secret that water quality due to widespread water contamination is a problem in this country, so it is smart for you to recognize that there is a possible problem with your water. You may have already ordered reports from your water supplier to determine how safe your water is. If so, that is a good first step. While you wait for them, here are some additional tips to help improve your family’s water quality now.
The hardest thing to do when wanting to improve your family’s water quality is to get started. Many times, you may think it’ll be better to leave a problem that is this large to people who are in power and can make a difference. Waiting for the government to change your water quality is unrealistic. If you start the task and make it a family activity, that will help to keep the whole family in the habit of water awareness even when the children grow up and start their own families. If your entire family works together to improve your family’s water quality, that will make the process easier.
As you get your entire family involved, it’s important to let everyone know the dangers of flushing medication and cleaners down the drain. Flushing things down the toilet will introduce chemicals and medication into the water supply. You need to remember that other people, including yourself and your family, drink that water. There have been studies that surprise people about the amount of medication found in the public water supply.
Any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, should be taken to a hazardous waste collection site to be properly disposed of. If you are unable to make it to one of the sites or cannot find one in your area, mix the medication with coffee grounds. Put that mixture in a waterproof plain container, a sealable bag, or empty cans and throw it away.
Before you dispose of household cleaners, read the label printed on the can or bottle. Many of the cleaners used to clean sinks, showers, toilets, and tubs can be poured down the toilet. It is recommended not to dispose of anything down the drain if you have a septic tank. If you have a cleaner that can be disposed down the drain, turn the water on and pour the chemical compound into the flowing water slowly. After you’ve emptied the bottle, let the water run after the chemicals are gone. Clean out the bottle, wrap it in newspaper, and dispose with your household garbage. If the container is glass or plastic, it can be recycled as well.
Some other products that shouldn’t be flushed are pesticides, herbicides, oil paints, paint cleaners, and oil and transmission fluids. Many of the activities you do in the garage or the driveway can result in toxic byproducts that should not go into the public water supply. For example, don’t pour old gasoline that you would use in a lawnmower out into the street. When it rains, that gasoline will find its way into the public drain.
Also, never burn any hazardous material on the ground. When properly disposing of any hazardous materials, don’t combine them. These materials can include anything that you are tempted to flush. One way to take care of hazardous materials is to solidify these waste products.
The first step to solidify is to put on gloves to protect your hands from the chemicals. Have the waste ready. Use any absorbent material like sawdust, kitty litter, paper towels, or rags to soak up the liquid. You’ll make the liquid chemical solid, making it safe to put out with the rest of your trash.
By exposing leftover latex paint to air, it will solidify the paint so you can dispose of the paint in the household garage. You can also wrap empty containers in layers of newspaper to prevent exposing any contamination to the environment.
These steps are to help your family’s water quality in the end. One way to immediately make your water better is by installing a reliable Aquasana water filtration system. This will protect your family from poor water quality that you cannot control. That is a good feeling for any homeowner or parent.
