How it’s done and how you can be sure your filter is working

It’s estimated as many as 15 percent of homes in the United States have lead coming out of the water from the taps. Even if water starts out from the source free of lead, it can pick up lead from the transit system- the pipes and fixtures that bring water to your tap.

Lead is a neurotoxin and dangerous to health. There is no safe level of lead for kids or adults . But that doesn’t mean you should live in fear. Lead can easily be removed from drinking water with a water filter.

aq-pwfs-p-b_3qtrLThe two most common ways to remove lead from drinking water are ion exchange and reverse osmosis. By definition, ion exchange is the exchange of ions of the same charge between an insoluble solid and a solution. In water filter terms, that means we use a potassium ion to bond to and grab heavy metal contaminates such as lead from your drinking water.

The other way to filter lead out of your water is with reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis is the process by which a solvent passes through a porous membrane in the direction opposite to that for natural osmosis when subjected to pressure. Traditional reverse osmosis systems remove nearly everything larger than a water molecule from water including naturally occurring trace minerals. This process includes the removal of particles like lead, fluoride, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and asbestos.

Aquasana offers drinking water filters at a wide range of prices including systems that do not require plumbing- great for people who are renting. We believe everyone should have access to a filter certified by NSF at a reasonable price. Lead is a growing concern for many of us, but it’s not the only concern. Take control of your water and invest in a water filter to remove everything you don’t want from your drinking water.
