Why Water Is Your Best Party Date

This time of year seems to be the perfect storm for drinking too much. Holiday parties, New Year’s Eve parties, impending resolutions of diets. The reasons to have a drink are plentiful. One drink is fine for most people. The problem is when one drink becomes many. The best way to stay ahead of a hangover is to drink water (filtered, obviously).

Drink water before, between, and after drinks

Remember to drink water. Not just before drinking, but all night long. A big component of being hung-over is dehydration. Drinking water throughout the night helps alleviate this. Water is proven to help alcohol absorption and breakdown, and gives you something to drink before refilling your cup. Aim to drink a glass of water before each drink, then have a glass between drinks as well. You can also sip the water slowly to put more time between alcoholic drinks.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it makes you pee more, which can lead to dehydration, which leads to hangovers. Water is your friend. Not soft drinks, water. Aim to have one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume. It’s hard to do it, and you will pee quite a lot, but try.

Alternate with water

This is a tried and true way to both cut back on alcohol and stay hydrated, thereby preventing a hangover. Every drink or two, ask for some water. You can ask for sparkling or flat, doesn’t matter! Just be sure to finish the water and sip slowly on the alcoholic beverage.
