Celebrate your independence from
bottled water

Recently 14 brands of bottled water were recalled due to potential E coli contamination. Yuck. Yet another reason to bottle your own water. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacterium that lives in the digestive tracts of healthy people and animals. Most types of E. coli are harmless, but this bacterium should not be taken lightly, as it can cause severe damage to your body. E. coli is usually found in the intestines of agricultural animals.

So how does a person become infected with E. coli? Ok, this science lesson is about to get a little gross: contact with infected animal and human waste. Feces can be carried through contaminated water and food. Raw fruits and veggies that have come into contact with waste can be infected if not treated properly before being sold in the market place. E coli can get in your water when it is not treated properly through water treatment facilities. Open reservoirs are also a big risk many cities face.

Healthy people can frequently fight off this bacteria and may not even know they were exposed. But people with weak immune systems, older adults, and children are more likely to experience some kind of symptoms 3 to 4 days after infection. These people are more at risk of developing life-threatening infections. Symptoms may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

City municipalities do all they can to provide us with the cleanest water possible, but the truth is E. coli will always find its way into our lives due to agricultural runoff and contaminated rain water. If a water treatment facility doesn’t use enough cleaning agents, E coli can make its way into our drinking water.

To keep your family safe from E coli (viruses and cysts too) your best bet is install a whole home water filter with a UV light. The Aquasana Rhino Whole House Well Water Filter comes with an optional UV Sterilight filtration system that kills 99.99% of viruses, bacteria like E. coli, and chlorine resistant cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia.

Think about the millions of people and animals using water on earth since the beginning of time.  All water is contaminated. The water you drink today is recycled water. It’s the same water that the world has been drinking and using for centuries, long before you or anyone you know ever existed. Each source of water is contaminated.  The smartest thing you can do is to have your water tested to figure out exactly what lurks within. Only then can you take the proper steps to clean your water.
