Getting Started with the Whole House Salt-Free Water Conditioner
Aquasana Whole House Salt-Free Water Conditioner
1. Do I need a plumber to replace the Salt-Free Water Conditioner filters?
Our replacement filters are designed for easy replacements – no plumber required. Please read through the owner's manual carefully before attempting to replace your filters. If you have any questions or need assistance, our technical support representatives at 877-996-2875 can walk you through the installation process.
2. How often do I replace Salt-Free Water Conditioner filters?
The SLOW PHOS Salt-Free Water Conditioner should be replaced every 6 months for optimum performance.
3. What does SLOW PHOS mean?
SLOW PHOS is a salt-free water conditioning technology that naturally descales your water and protects your pipes from corrosion with the use of added sodium. SLOW PHOS uses food grade polyphosphate beads engineered to dissolve at a controlled (or "slow") concentration to effectively target scale producing hard mineral carbonate crystals including calcium, magnesium, and barium (Ca, Mg, and Ba). SLOW PHOS technology works by altering the ionic charge of these carbonate crystals to reduce their attraction to one another in your water. By altering their ionic charge, hard minerals will no longer clump or pack together and create scale (Ca, Mg, and Ba buildup). In addition, SLOW PHOS phosphates act as a protective barrier in your plumbing to protect from pipe corrosion. Unlike salt-based water softeners, Aquasana SLOW PHOS technology will not demineralize your water nor will it negatively affect the environment by adding excessive amounts of sodium into our communal water system.
4. Does the Salt-Free Water Conditioner Replacement use chemicals?
No, this filter does not use harsh chemicals or the use of salt.
5. What is hard water?
Hard water is caused by dissolved minerals binding together to produce scale, which can harm your internal pipes, plumbing, and home appliances. Hard water contains a higher-than-average amount of dissolved minerals (primarily calcium and magnesium), and a higher concentration of multivalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+).
6. Does having hard water mean it is contaminated?
No, hard water is more of a nuisance than a health issue and is not always considered contaminated. Most water sources in the USA are considered hard.
7. Is hard water safe to drink?
Hard water can be city water or well water meaning it may or may not be pre-treated. The minerals that make water "hard" are not considered contaminants, but hard water can still contain additional contaminants that are not safe for consumption.
8. What is soft water and how do I know if my home has it?
The most recognizable trait of "soft" water is how much more soap lathers, as opposed to hard water. Soap lathers less due to the higher concentration of minerals. Water softeners reduce the negative effects of dissolved minerals in water that can clump together and produce scale buildup.
9. Does having soft water mean it is clean water?
Soft water does not mean clean water. Your water can be soft and still have contaminants present in the water.
10. Is soft water safe to drink?
Yes, soft water is considered potable. However, drinking water from a sodium-based softener increases your daily intake of sodium, which can lead to health problems in sodium-sensitive individuals. Please keep in mind that a water softener is not a water filter. A water softener does not remove contaminants present in your water.
11. Will the system reduce hardness or TDS levels?
No. Unlike salt-based softeners, our Salt-Free Water Conditioner does not need to remove the hard minerals from your water in order to reduce scale. Because hard minerals are not replaced by salt or other chemicals, TDS levels will remain the same even though scale formation is inhibited.
