Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job as I desired We have used this shower head with yearly filter replacement for many years. Before we started using this filter, our shower showed an orange color residue in corners & edges. Possibly from old pipes. Since using Aquasana, no orang residue & a shower stayed clean!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made a differance This is our second one, we were undecided what to do because the water here in Sun City is horrible. We use to have to scrub our shower more then once a week and our shower curtain would just get stiff from all the bad chemicals in the water. This filter has made a big impact and will continue to use them

Aquasana FAQs

  1. Do I have to pay for a plumber to install the system?

Aquasana shower systems are very easy to install, and you can do it yourself in minutes. No plumber is necessary. If you have any questions or need assistance, our technical support representatives at 866-662-6885 can walk you through the installation process.

  2. What is the flow rate of the AQ-4100, AQ-4100NSH, & AQ-4105?

The optimum flow rate for the filter and shower head is 2.5 gallons per minute.

  3. Can I use my own shower head or hand-held wand with the AQ-4100?

Yes, you can use your own shower head. The AQ-4100NSH is the correct model for individuals using their own shower head. Just remember the shower head needs to have the same 1/2 inch connection as standard shower heads and the ideal flow rate would be 2.5 gallons per minute. If your shower head processes more than a 2.5 gallon flow rate per minute, the quality of filtration may degrade slightly. Increasing the flow rate by changing the shower head reduces contact time with the media and will reduce the filtration quality. If you decrease the flow rate of the system by using a different shower head, or use a shower head with a shut-off switch, you may cause damage to the system and void your warranty.

  4. Can I use the shower system for drinking water?

Drinking some of the water during your shower poses no health risk. However, Aquasana does not recommend that you use the shower system as a primary drinking water source since it is not designed as a drinking system and has only been tested under shower conditions and regulations.

  5. Can I hook the shower system up under a constant pressure application?

No, the shower system is designed to allow the water to consistently pass through the system as it filters. If the system is under constant pressure and unable to release the pressure introduced into the system during filtration, damage can occur to the unit.

  6. How do I know if the Aquasana shower system will fit the shower pipe coming out of my wall?

Most shower connections are 1/2 inch, which means that the Aquasana shower systems will fit the shower pipe in most homes.

  7. How much chlorine does the shower system remove?

Aquasana shower systems are tested to remove 91% chlorine for 10,000 gallons.

  8. How do I know how many showers it takes to use 10,000 gallons?

10,000 gallons at 2 1/2 gallons per minute = 4,000 minutes of showering
    - You can take 400 10-minute showers
    - You can take 267 15-minute showers

Does this shower filter out iron?  We have large concentrations of iron in our water (not well water) that leaves an orange sludge on shower curtain.  Hair also feels dirty one day after washing and skin is dry.

Asked by: KellyAnn
Unfortunately, the shower system should not be a consideration for removing iron. After hardness in well water, iron is the most common water problem dealt with by homeowners with well water. Unfortunately, iron is also difficult to treat to a satisfactory level. This difficulty is due to the fact that iron can be found in well water in several forms, each of which may require a different water treatment for removal or control. Other factors, like the pH level of the well water, will also affect how successful a well water treatment approach will be.

We have two homes and spend roughly 6 months at each location. Does this mean we should be able to replace each shower head filter once a year?

Asked by: Jim AZ
Thank you for your interest in Aquasana. We recommend changing the filters every six months. We base our estimates and requirements on the testing done by the NSF. In the case of our filtration systems, it is not always necessarily the amount of water that has passed through the system, but the amount of time that the filters have been in contact with Water. Keep in mind that while you may be using a minimal amount of water, the filters are constantly soaking in the water, waiting for a valve to open, and the water to resume flowing. We make suggestions based on the safest and healthiest way to maintain our systems. Once the filter starts to degrade due to elongated contact with water, you risk bacteria and mold growing inside the filter and the system: Heterotrophs (heterotrophic bacteria) are a group of microorganisms (yeast, molds & bacteria) that use organic carbon as food (as opposed to autotrophs like algae that use sunlight) and are found in every type of water.

Does your shower unit filter out fluoride? If not, will you be making a unit that filters out fluoride? Please, don't say you leave the fluoride behind because its good, it was finally labeled as as neurotoxin. I appreciate the feedback Thank you, JP

Asked by: Peezy
I have been using the Aquasana shower filters for a number of years. As far as I know, the shower filters are not engineered to filter out fluoride. Perhaps the drinking ones do-- I don't use one so I cannot recommend a brand to you.

What chemicals does the AQ-4125 filter out?  Does it filter chloramine?

Asked by: Aquasane
Hello! Natural coconut shell carbon filters out chlorine and other harsh chemicals, while copper/zinc media further reduces chlorine and enhances water pH balance. The Aquasana shower filter improves air quality, enhances water pH and removes over 90% of chlorine for the healthiest shower experience. Thank you, Aquasana Customer Support

Where does the old filter go once replaced? Can it be recycled.

Asked by: Gomelmeier
We have designed this system to minimize the environmental impact of our replacement elements, which are over 95% biodegradable carbon. Our company will recycle the filters for you, but we do not cover the shipping cost to return the filters back to us. In reality, the environmental impact of shipping the filters back to us outweighs the good of recycling. Since the shower filter is made of a hard plastic that makes accessing the carbon very difficult, you will need to recycle the entire piece. Just check with your city, and as long as they accept polypropylene, you can just put the filter in your normal recycling bin. Thank you, Aquasana

I'm trying to take the old filter off and it won't budge. Any sugesstions to remove it would be appreciated.

Asked by: Celeste
We found that hard water build up made it difficult to remove the filter so we ran it under hot tap water which allowed us to loosen it. You may also want to soak it in water and white vinegar to help dissolve the mineral build up.

what's the item or part # for the shower filter replacement that removes chloramines?

Asked by: kj07
This shower filter will remove chlorine or chloramines. Due to the harsh nature of chloramines, it takes more media power to remove them. Due to this, you may just need to replace the filter more often.

Does this filter reduce the iron content of the filtered water

Asked by: arthur121340
I have not check the iron content of my water since installing the Aquasana filters, but as far as I am concerned after researching other systems, this is the best you can get. I am very happy with the filters and the service provided is excellent. I also like the fact that the water doesn't taste filtered, and that the filters can be sent automatically for a cheaper price!

I have a family of three. At three showers a day how long would the filter last?

Asked by: good hair wanted
Well, we do two showers/day with a marvelous low flow 1.6 gpm shower head and replaced filter at 1 year. Only replaced as updating other filters for drinking water. Tested for clorene with a pool tester to see if it is still working. Recommend You get an inexpensive whole house filter from Your local hardware store with a high pass through carbon filter. Then test the shower water with an inexpensive swimming pool test kit for clorene and ph. Should have next to zero clorene and a ph around 7 or 8. We use the Aquasana on our just moved into tiny home as a whole house was more difficult to install. Used the whole house in our previous big home. If You still need carbon in the shower, consider installing the Aquasana on the water line to Your shower rather than hanging it from the showerhead pipe. Less strain on the pipe above Your head. That's how we did it. Hope this helps. By the way, use the pool tester on incoming drinking water too. You'll be happy with the before and after effects of eliminating clorene and balancing ph!

I have been using this filter (aq-4100/4105) for years, because I'm on a well that is heavy in iron. My first line of defense is a whole house softener, with this being secondary. Are you now saying this is not the correct filter for hard well water?

Asked by: AMU*
I have very hard well. water with no softener installed. Works great for my shower. Only issue is it does not last very long. Because of how hard my water is. But for first 2 months its the difference between night and day. I would say yes this is the correct filter for hard water. And with a softener installed up stream. This filter should last a lot longer then it does at my house.

How do I know when a new filter for my shower is needed? When I turn it on the water runs dark for a few minutes. Is that normal?

Asked by: belle
Hi Bella, There are a couple things that can cause that surge of dark water when you turn the system on. If it is a new filter, then this is just the excess carbon being flushed out, and should resolve itself after a week or so. If it is an older filter, then it is just sediment that has been trapped inside the filter. When you turn the water on, that initial surge of water can force that trapped dirt out. We suggest changing the filter every 6 months to ensure that the filtration media does not start to degrade. Thank you, Aquasana Customer Support

If your city uses a combination of chlorine and ammonia (chloramines) or if you are on well water, you can call into 866.662.6885 and request a special filter be sent out. All of these filters will be the same price on Water for Life ($44.62). You can cancel this program at any time with no penalty.
