Each year people set New Year’s resolutions with the goal of making an improvement in some area of their life. According to Statista, the most common New Year’s resolutions of 2021 were to:

  1. Exercise more (50%)
  2. Lose weight (48%)
  3. Save more money (44%)

While all of these are great opportunities to make a positive change in your life, for 2023 why not go a step further and do something that’s good for yourself and the environment? If you’re interested in a sustainable New Year’s resolution for 2023, we’ve got a few unique New Year’s resolutions for you to consider. Check out these New Year’s resolutions that are great for both your health and the environment.

Start using a reusable water bottle

It’s estimated that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and drinking more water is another common New Year’s resolution that many people set. However, if you’re planning on increasing your water intake to the recommended level — do it with a reusable water bottle instead of disposable plastic bottles.

Reusable bottles offer the same convenience and portability of disposable plastic bottles, but are significantly better for the environment. You’ve probably heard that disposable bottles are bad for the environment, but here are a couple of stats that really put their impact on the environment in perspective:

  1. Each day, 1.3 billion plastic bottles are used at a rate of about 1 million per minute
  2. Plastic bottles take 450 years to decompose
  3. 80% of plastic bottles end up in landfills

Never mind the fact that disposable plastic bottles can also contain microplastics — a potentially serious risk to your health.

If you’re looking for a sustainable New Year’s resolution that’s great for your health and the environment, using a reusable water bottle to drink more water is a fantastic choice. Use green cleaning products

Making the switch to green cleaning products is a great New Year’s resolution for your health and the environment, as these products feature natural ingredients and biodegradable packaging.

According to the EPA, some cleaning products may contain chemicals associated with eye, skin, respiratory, and other health issues. These chemicals can leach into the environment causing damage when disposed of. And did you know that non-eco-friendly packaging can lead to long decomposition times and may contain harmful contaminants like BPA and phthalates.

Green cleaning products typically use non-toxic ingredients you’ll recognize like baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice among others that get the job done without causing damage to your health and the environment. You may even be able to make your own green cleaners using household items you already have. However, if purchasing green cleaning products — carefully review the label and ingredient list. Many products make vague claims like “environmentally friendly, “eco-safe”, or “green” that may or may not be true. For green products you can trust, check out the EPA’s Safer Choice program featuring products that are certified to be safer for your health and the environment.

Try meatless Mondays

The idea of Meatless Mondays has been around since World War I, when it was used to reduce consumption and help the war effort. It then resurged in 2003 as a public health initiative and has since grown in popularity. Today, Meatless Monday is supported by millions of people in over 40 countries across the world. This is a great sustainable New Year’s resolution with numerous benefits for your health and the environment.

For your health, eating less meat in favor of plant-based foods like vegetables, beans, and nuts has a long list of short and long-term health benefits including:

  • Improved heart health
  • Reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Increased kidney health

For the environment, it’s important to note that meat takes a considerable amount of resources to produce. Here are a couple of interesting facts:

  • Livestock production creates more greenhouse gasses than all cars, trucks, planes, and trains in the world
  • Producing a single 1/4 lb beef burger uses 425 gallons of water, and uses enough energy to power an iPhone for six months
  • Skipping one serving of beef every Monday for a year saves the equivalent emissions to driving 348 miles in a car
  • estimated that the savings would be 100 billion gallons of water and 70 million gallons of gas each year
Producing a single ¼ lb beef burger uses 425 gallons of water, and uses enough energy to power an iPhone for six months

Switch to bar soap, shampoo, and conditioner

On the subject of what’s in bars vs. what’s in bottled soaps, shampoos, and conditioners — you’ll find that bars are more likely to use natural and cruelty-free ingredients while bottled options are usually a mix of chemicals and mostly water. In fact, National Geographic notes that most shampoos are up to 80% water, conditioners are up to 95% water, and that shampoo bars can outlast two to three bottles of liquid shampoo. As an added bonus, using natural ingredients means your hair and skin won’t be stripped of natural oils resulting in dryness.

In terms of waste, bars feature less packaging than bottles and many are wrapped in recycled paper or boxes. Also, bars are less likely to contain plastic microbeads which damage marine life when they get into rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Beyond switching to bar soap, shampoo, and conditioner — another great way to get softer skin and healthier hair is using a shower water filter to remove contaminants like chlorine from your tap water.

Use a water filter to improve your health and extend the life of your appliances

Another water-related sustainable New Year’s resolution that’s great for the environment and your health is to invest in a water filter at home. Water filters are a great way to remove harmful contaminants that are sometimes missed by treatment facilities including lead, PFOA/PFOS, chlorine, and several others. By installing a water filter, you can improve the health and taste of your water at home, and bottle it in your reusable water bottle of choice.

Beyond your health, this also positively impacts your wallet and the environment by improving the efficiency and lifespan of your appliances. Over time, sediment in your tap water can build-up in appliances like dishwashers, refrigerators, water tanks, and washing machines — which reduces their efficiency and requires them to use more energy in order to continue working. Generating extra energy can contribute to pollution and higher energy bills. Sediment build-up causes wear and tear on appliances that reduces their lifespans — meaning you’ll have to discard them sooner and purchase replacements more often. While some of the discarded material may be recycled, a lot of it will end up in landfills.

To improve the health and taste of your water while making a positive impact on the environment, consider investing in a whole house water filter that removes contaminants and reduces sediment build-up.

We hope this list of healthy, sustainable New Year’s resolutions provides you with a few unique ideas that you’ll be trying in 2023.
