FAQ
Aquasana FAQs
1. What's the flow rate of the HealthShield™ whole house filter?

The HealthShield™ whole house filter has a flow rate of 5.7 gallons per minute (gpm). True flow rates will vary with influent water pressure. Most homes use only 2 to 3 GPM the majority of the time.

The performance indicator included in the HealthShield™ installation kit displays the current flow rate running through the system. The PID display will also show the remaining capacity in gallons.

HealthShield™ system uses a specialized blend of three advanced media layers designed to target a wide range of contaminants.

The first filtration layer is engineered for highly efficient reduction of chlorine and chloramines to improve water taste and odor. The second layer is designed to help enhance PFAS* reduction, including difficult-to-reduce short-chain PFAS compounds. The third layer helps reduce additional contaminants such as VOCs, ibuprofen, BPA, and PFAS for more comprehensive whole home water filtration.

The HealthShield™ is internally tested to remove 97.4% of chlorine for 165,000 gallons.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of widely used, long-lasting chemicals that break down very slowly over time. Because of their durability and widespread use, PFAS are now found throughout the environment — including in water, air, soil, and even in fish and other wildlife across the globe.

These chemicals have been used in a wide range of consumer, commercial, and industrial products, which has led to their presence in many food products and in the blood of both people and animals worldwide.

There are thousands of different PFAS compounds, making them complex to study and regulate. While research is ongoing, some scientific studies have linked exposure to certain PFAS to potential harmful health effects in humans and animals.

PFAS chemicals are nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they don't break down naturally, persisting in the environment and accumulating in the human body over time.

The HealthShield™ system is WQA tested and certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 to remove 99.9% of PFAS* to below 4 parts per trillion.

*PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS, and PFHpA

Chloramines are a disinfection agent comprised of chlorine and ammonia used as an alternative to chlorine in some city water treatment facilities. The HealthShield™ whole house system is internally tested to remove 97.49% of chloramines.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, VOCs, also known as “Volatile organic compounds,” are chemicals that easily evaporate into the air from everyday products like paints, cleaning supplies, fuels, and building materials. They are commonly found indoors, often at higher levels than outdoors, and can come from thousands of household and industrial products.

Some VOCs may have short- or long-term health effects, which is why they are a common concern in both indoor air and water quality.

The HealthShield™ system is WQA tested and certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 to remove 99.8% of VOCs.

Yes, this system requires a 120V/60Hz power outlet for the performance indicator, located within ten feet of the unit to ensure the power cord can reach.

HealthShield™ has a color-coded display for easy evaluation of maintenance needs. When the system is at 10-100% remaining capacity, the lower part of the display will be green, and will require you to touch the screen to activate it. Once the system has 0-10% remaining capacity, the display will always be on, and the lower part will be yellow. Once the system has reached capacity, the display will always be on, and the lower part of the display will be red.

The PID display will also show the remaining capacity in gallons and the current flow rate of water through the system.

The HealthShield™ installation kit includes a PID (performance indicator) that has a color-coded display that tells you when it's time to replace your filter. When the tank is between 0%-10% of the remaining capacity, the display will show yellow. Once the tank is ready for replacement, the display will show red. The PID will also display the remaining capacity in gallons.

Once your HealthShield™ tank has reached the end of its service life and is ready for replacement, it is generally classified as household waste under current federal regulations and can typically be disposed of through standard household waste disposal methods without special handling requirements.

Because disposal regulations can vary by location, we recommend checking with your state or local department of environmental protection or waste management authority for guidance on any applicable local disposal requirements or regulations.

The filtration system is installed at the point where the main water supply enters the home, delivering filtered water throughout your home.
We strongly recommend using a licensed plumber since they carry insurance to cover any damages caused by an installation error. This will give you the security that the work was done properly, and peace of mind in knowing that the installation is backed up by the plumbing company's insurance plan. State and local regulations may require installation by a licensed plumber or water treatment professional.
Most homeowners should not notice a significant drop in water pressure after installing the HealthShield™ whole house water filter when operating within the system's rated flow range.
City water is treated by municipalities to reduce bacteria, viruses, and common contamination sources. It's also regulated per the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) guidelines. Well water comes from an underground aquifer that is pumped into a home and is typically untreated. Well water may contain higher than average levels of iron or sulfur, or other contaminants. Our recommended UV filter add-on tackles the extra challenges of well water by sterilizing up to 99.8% of bacteria and nonpathogenic viruses.
After you install your whole house filter, you may notice your water is cloudy. Cloudy or white water is likely a result of air in the pipes and filtration media. This trapped air is what causes the water to have a cloudy appearance. This is very common and not harmful. The trapped air can take a week to a month to completely resolve.
No, the HealthShield™ system does not require a drain line as it is a non-backwashing system. This means it does not waste water during normal operation.
It is recommended to disinfect all water supplies that are not protected by a municipal water (city water) source. By providing your own disinfection, you are ensuring the safety of your water supply for you and your family. Our recommended UV filter add-on provides peace of mind by tackling up to 99.8% of bacteria and nonpathogenic viruses.
To tackle these contaminants, we recommend our UV filter that is NSF tested and certified to NSF Standard 55, Class B and sterilizes up to 99.8% of bacteria and nonpathogenic viruses.

Hard water is a count of mineral content. It occurs when dissolved minerals clump together to produce scale that can harm your internal pipes, plumbing, and home appliances. Hard water contains a higher-than-average amount of dissolved minerals (primarily calcium and magnesium), and a higher concentration of multivalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+).

Water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Higher hardness values can result in mineral deposit and scale issues in your plumbing, fixtures, and home appliances.

No, hard water does not mean water is contaminated. It is a measurement of the dissolved calcium and magnesium present in your water. Most water sources in the USA are considered hard.
Hard water can be city water or well water meaning it may or may not be pre-treated. The minerals that make water "hard" are not considered a health risk, but hard water can still contain additional contaminants that are not safe for consumption.
Soft water is water that has either been treated by a water softener or naturally contains less hard minerals. The most recognizable trait of "soft" water is how much more soap lathers, as opposed to hard water. Soap lathers less due to the higher concentration of minerals. Water softeners reduce the negative effects of dissolved minerals in water that can clump together and produce scale buildup.
Soft water does not mean clean water. Your water can be soft and still have contaminants present in the water.
Yes, soft water is considered potable. Drinking water from a sodium-based softener increases your daily intake of sodium, which can lead to health problems in sodium-sensitive individuals. Please keep in mind that a water softener is not a water filter. A water softener does not remove contaminants present in your water.
A salt-based water softener is a softener system designed to remove/reduce calcium and magnesium from the water by exchanging it with sodium. This is done through an ion exchange process that alters the molecular structure of the calcium and magnesium from a divalent ion to a univalent ion, making the water "softer."

Water conditioners use several alternate technologies, like magnetic, electronic, or catalytic methods, to change the way minerals in water behave, helping to prevent scale buildup in pipes. However, these methods do not reduce the water's hardness minerals. Since a water softener reduces the hardness minerals, you get added benefits including reduces spotting, improved soap and detergent effectiveness, and more.

If you're unsure if your home's water needs a water softener or a water conditioner, please reach out to one of our Water Experts at 866-662-6885.
