FAQ
Aquasana FAQs
1. What is a water softener, and how does it work?
A water softener is a system that reduces calcium, magnesium, and other minerals in hard water, making it softer. It typically uses a process called ion exchange to replace hard minerals with sodium or potassium ions.
Softened water helps prevent scale buildup in pipes and appliances, extends the life of water heaters, improves soap and detergent effectiveness, and leaves skin and hair feeling smoother.
Signs of hard water include white scale buildup on faucets, spots on dishes, reduced soap lather, dry skin, and dull hair. A water report from your municipality, or a water hardness test can confirm if a water softener is needed. Generally, any water with a hardness level greater than 3 grains per gallon can benefit from a water softener.
Hard water is a count of mineral content. It occurs when dissolved minerals clump together to produce scale that can harm your internal pipes, plumbing, and home appliances. Hard water contains a higher-than-average amount of dissolved minerals (primarily calcium and magnesium), and a higher concentration of multivalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+).
Water conditioners use several alternate technologies, like magnetic, electronic, or catalytic methods, to change the way minerals in water behave, helping to prevent scale buildup in pipes. However, these methods do not reduce the water's hardness minerals. Since a water softener reduces the hardness minerals, you get added benefits including reduced spotting, improved soap and detergent effectiveness, and more.
Our SimplySoft® 40,000 Grain Water Softener is ideal for small to medium households of up to 5 people. Our SimplySoft® 60,000 Grain Softener is perfect for larger homes and those seeking enhanced performance.
Salt-based systems require regular replenishment of salt, with the total amount being dependent on the hardness of your water. The resin bed may also need cleaning with a resin cleaner occasionally to ensure optimal operation. We sell a Water Softener Cleaner to help with this. Occasionally, internal components in the valve assembly may need to be cleaned or have seals replaced. This should be no more frequent than annually and can be much longer between intervals depending on the quality of the incoming water supply.
Our system does not include salt at the time of purchase. Water softener salt can be purchased by the bag at your nearest home improvement store and some grocery and convenience stores. Salt should be purchased prior to system installation.
Salt sold in home improvement, grocery, and convenience stores labeled for water softening should be used. Sodium Chloride is the most common type of softener salt, but Potassium Chloride salt is also an option for those extremely sensitive to sodium intake. Both are often available as "solar salt," pellets, or in block form. Rock salt should not be used as it contains sediment and debris which may cause long term maintenance issues in your water softener.
Yes, this system uses a 12V AC power adapter and must be plugged into an electrical outlet.
Some systems add sodium to the water, which may not be ideal for people on low-sodium diets. However, the amount of sodium added a day [typically about 7.5 milligrams sodium per quart for every grain per gallon (gpg) of hardness, but dependent on the water hardness] is less than what you would consume in an average slice of white bread or an 8 oz glass of milk. Potassium Chloride can also be used as an alternative in water softener to avoid the additional sodium. Note that softened water may not be suitable for watering plants.
Most water softeners are designed specifically to reduce hardness minerals. To remove other contaminants like chlorine, iron, or bacteria, additional filtration systems may be needed, and are often used in combination with a water softener.
With proper maintenance, a typical water softener can last 10-20 years. Regular cleaning, maintenance of wear components, and checking the system's efficiency can help extend its lifespan. We sell a Water Softener Cleaner to help with your system maintenance.
While some systems can be installed by a knowledgeable DIYer, professional installation is often recommended to ensure proper setup and to avoid issues with warranties or water pressure.
Salt-based softeners discharge brine solution with chlorides, which can contribute to environmental salinity issues. To mitigate this, some areas regulate or restrict their use. Choosing an efficient water softener like one of Aquasana's SimplySoft® systems helps reduce the impact and meet some municipal regulations.
Signs of a properly functioning water softener include reduced scale buildup, improved soap lather, and softer skin and hair. If these benefits are not apparent, the system may need maintenance or servicing.
Yes, the SimplySoft® 40,000 and 60,000 Grain Softeners are compatible with the Rhino®, Rhino® Max Flow, Rhino® Chloramines, Rhino® Chloramines Max Flow, Rhino® Well Water, and OptimH2O® whole house systems. If you're interested in learning more about a whole house water filter and water softener, call our Water Experts at 866-662-6885.
Start with checking your water quality report and/or conducting a water test. A common measurement of water hardness is grains per gallon (gpg). If your hard water test displays the results in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter (mg/L), you can take the total hardness level and divide it by 17.1 to determine the hardness in grains per gallon.
Anything over 3 grains is considered to be hard water.
Approximately 85% of the United States has hard water. The following hard water map illustrates the areas of hardness across the country. Map of US Water Hardness Areas

The amount of salt added to your water a day from a SimplySoft® softener is roughly equivalent to the amount of salt in one piece of bread. The SimplySoft® Water Softeners include a fast rinse cycle, where water is rinsed through the resin to flush any remaining salt brine out of the system. If you are sensitive to sodium, there are other types of salt available to add to the brine tank (potassium chloride salt).

If you are still concerned about the salt in your home's water with a softener, adding a Reverse Osmosis system, like the Aquasana SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis, will filter any remaining salt out of your drinking water.
