FAQ
Aquasana FAQs
1. Do I need a plumber to install the system?
Depending on your skills and experience, we recommend hiring a professional to install your reverse osmosis system. Installation does require drilling into your pipes, which is not recommended for individuals unfamiliar with plumbing and permanent appliance installation. Please read through the owner's manual carefully before attempting to install the system. If you have any questions or need assistance, our technical support representatives at 866-662-6885 can guide you through the installation process.
Drilling into your water pipes is required to install the Aquasana HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis water filter. For an easy installation that requires zero drilling, we recommend our Claryum® Direct Connect filter. This DIY install filter connects directly to your cold water line. So, no drilling or altering your plumbing is required. Aquasana also has a countertop option that offers the same professional grade filtration as our under sink options, the Clean Water Machine.
The faucet included with the Aquasana HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis is expertly designed to work with our reverse osmosis system. If you choose to use another reverse osmosis air gap faucet, please consult the Owner's Manual, and we recommend you seek the help of a plumber to ensure proper installation. In order to maintain the NSF/ANSI 58 certification of this product, the drain line installation must comply with the standard requirements of a vertical air gap of two pipe diameters or 25 mm (1 in), whichever is larger, or an air gap faucet that is tested and certified against NSF/ANSI 58 must be included.

It depends on your local plumbing code. Some plumbing codes require a reverse osmosis (RO) system to be installed with either an air gap faucet or a backflow prevention device on the drain connection. These components help prevent drain water from flowing back into the drinking water system and are intended to support health and safety requirements.

Before installation, check your local plumbing codes or consult a licensed plumber to determine which option is required in your area. HealthShield™ RO systems can be installed with a compliant air gap faucet or an approved backflow prevention solution, as allowed by local code.

When RO membranes are manufactured, there is a preservative used to protect the membrane fibers from damage. This preservative needs to be flushed out after the system is installed and prior to drinking water from the RO system.
Yes. Unlike traditional tank-based reverse osmosis systems, the HealthShield™ RO uses a built-in booster pump to maintain strong water pressure and deliver purified water on demand. To operate, the system requires access to a standard 120V electrical outlet located within 6 feet of the unit.
Yes. HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis includes a built-in Leak Detection and Protection System that continuously monitors for water leaks inside the unit. If water is detected, the system automatically shuts down the water inlet, pump, and drain valve to help stop water flow and prevent further leakage. Flashing indicator lights and an audible alarm notify you so the issue can be addressed.
If the HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis system detects water inside the unit, it automatically shuts down key components and alerts you with flashing indicator lights and an audible alarm. Address the source of the leak and dry any water inside the base of the unit. Drainage openings in the base help residual water dry. Once the area is dry and the issue has been resolved, reset the system by disconnecting and reconnecting power. Refer to the Owner's Manual or contact Aquasana Customer Support at 866-662-6885 if you need assistance.
Ensure all tubing is not bent or kinked. Check to ensure the shut-off valve is fully open. If you're still experiencing slow water pressure and it has been over six months since changing the filter, we recommend changing your filter.
A visual way to ensure you are inserting the tubing all the way into the quick connect is to put a mark 5/8” up from the end of the tube; the tube should be inserted that far. After installing the system and flushing, leaks may not appear. Ensure your system is not leaking by checking post-installation periodically.
No, the guides to help with insertion can only fit in their correct cartridge slot.
The cartridge handle should be horizontal and the O icon is aligned with the lock icon.
Carbon fines can be present in your water when new filters are first installed and will go away after the flushing cycle.

Stage 1 (Claryum® Filter) filter cartridges should be replaced every 6 months or up to 320 gallons. Stage 2 (RO Membrane) should be replaced every 12 months depending on usage and water quality. For homes with higher water usage and/or poorer water quality, you may need to replace your RO Membrane sooner than every 12 months.

Yes. The HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis is IAPMO tested and certified to reduce 97.51% of fluoride from your drinking water.
Yes. The Aquasana HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis system is IAPMO tested and certified to reduce 96.4% of pentavalent arsenic from your drinking water. It will not convert trivalent arsenic to pentavalent arsenic.
Yes. The HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis is IAPMO tested and certified to reduce 99.67% of PFAS* from your drinking water.
The HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis system flows at a rate of 0.56 gpm (gallons per minute).
The HealthShield™ RO is designed for water efficiency, with a pure-to-drain ratio of 1.8:1. This means the system produces 1.8 gallons of purified water for every 1 gallon sent to drain, helping reduce water waste compared to many traditional reverse osmosis systems.

Reverse osmosis is an incredibly effective method of filtering water, and it works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane (a porous block) at a high pressure to remove contaminants. As this pressurized water passes through the membrane, contaminants are left behind and only clean water passes through.

Our reverse osmosis system uses a multi-stage filtration process for comprehensive water treatment. First, a built-in pre-filter reduces chlorine and sediment. Next, the RO membrane targets dissolved solids and microscopic contaminants. Finally, an Aquasana Claryum® post-filter enhances taste and odor while providing additional contaminant reduction before the water reaches your dedicated faucet.

Yes. The Aquasana HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis water filter uses reverse osmosis to effectively purify your drinking water. In addition to reverse osmosis, the system also uses selective filtration to reduce 99.99% of 85 total contaminants.
Reverse osmosis systems provide a higher level of contaminant reduction than many conventional water filters. HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis combines multiple stages of filtration with an RO membrane to reduce dissolved solids and microscopic contaminants that standard carbon filters may not target.
A tankless reverse osmosis system filters water without the need for a bulky storage tank. HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis features a compact, space-saving design that fits neatly under your sink while providing purified drinking water on demand.
Yes. By reducing contaminants that can cause unpleasant tastes and odors, including chlorine and VOCs, HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis helps deliver crisp, clean, great-tasting water for drinking, cooking, coffee, tea, and more.
Yes. HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis is certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53, 58, 372, and 401 for contaminant reduction and drinking water system performance. These certifications help provide confidence that the system has been independently tested to meet rigorous industry standards.
Reverse osmosis filtered water can be used for everyday drinking, cooking, and food preparation throughout the home. By reducing a broad range of contaminants, HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis helps provide cleaner water for the entire family.
TDS, or Total Dissolved Solids, is the amount of dissolved minerals and metals present in water. TDS meters tell you the concentration of dissolved minerals and metals, but they are not an accurate measurement for contamination. Aquasana products reduce and remove harmful TDS like lead. Read more about TDS here.

TDS creep is a common occurrence in reverse osmosis systems where the first water produced after a period of non-use may contain a higher concentration of dissolved solids than water produced during normal operation. When an RO system is idle, pressure across the membrane equalizes and dissolved ions can slowly move into the purified water resting next to the membrane.

HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis helps address this with an automatic flush feature. After the system finishes producing water, it flushes water through the membrane to help remove dissolved solids that could otherwise build up during idle periods. This helps keep the membrane cleaner and supports more consistent water quality from the first glass.

Using a reverse osmosis water filter is a great way to remove harmful contaminants like lead, mercury, asbestos, and other impurities that have a range of health concerns.
Carbon filtration focuses on reducing contaminants that impact taste and odor, such as chlorine. Reverse osmosis goes a step further by reducing dissolved solids and microscopic contaminants like fluoride, arsenic, and PFAS*. HealthShield™ Reverse Osmosis combines both technologies for comprehensive water filtration.

Cloudy water is completely normal after a new installation or filter change. In most cases, it's caused by tiny air bubbles released from the carbon filter. Activated carbon naturally holds oxygen from the manufacturing process, and when water first flows through the system, that air is released into your water.

You may also notice some air in the system right after installation. Running water through the filter during the initial flush — and over the next few uses — helps push this air out. As the system continues to run and sit between uses, the cloudiness will gradually disappear.

This cloudiness is harmless and does not affect water quality. Your water is safe to drink and will clear up on its own with regular use.

Yes. The HealthShield™ RO includes a pre-filter designed to help protect the system from sediment, such as sand, silt, rust, and other particles found in some water supplies. This added layer of protection helps maintain system performance and can extend the life of the RO membrane.

Signs of elevated sediment may include cloudy or gritty water, visible particles, reduced water pressure, or filters that need to be replaced more frequently than expected. If you’re unsure, fill a clear glass with water and let it sit undisturbed. Particles that settle at the bottom may indicate sediment in your water.

Homes with higher sediment levels may require more frequent replacement of the Stage 1 Claryum® filter to help keep the system performing at its best.
