Why Are Americans Still Drinking Plastic Bottled Water?

Aquasana survey reveals 84% of Americans still drink plastic bottled water, despite rising concerns about microplastics and plastic pollution.

Despite the concerns, our survey finds vast majority of Americans still turn to plastic bottles for drinking water

This Earth Day we're sharing surprising new survey results about Americans' bottled water habits. This year we learned that 84% of us are still reaching for single-use plastic bottles on a regular basis. Our recent survey of 1,231 U.S. adults, conducted in March 2026, reveals some interesting (and a bit concerning) trends about our water consumption and environmental impact.

The survey numbers you need to know

While 84% of Americans drink bottled water occasionally, we found that two-thirds (68%) of us drink bottled water on weekly basis. What’s more, one-third (32%) admit to drinking bottled water every day. Considering the global crisis around plastic pollution and the rising concerns over the health effects of microplastics, it’s pretty surprising that these habits haven’t shifted by now.

“We’ve been conducting surveys regularly for nearly a decade to keep a finger on the pulse of how people really feel about their drinking water, and we’ve seen that public concern over microplastics, in particular, has continued to climb over the past few years,” said Rachel Carollo, marketing director at Aquasana.

In fact, in our seventh annual Aquasana Water Quality Survey conducted last year, we found that an overwhelming 83% of Americans are concerned about microplastics in their drinking water. What's more, the number of U.S. adults who cited microplastics as their number one drinking water contaminant of concern has more than quadrupled, spiking +400% year-over-year from 2023.

Plastic pollution: The bigger picture

The United States ranks as the world’s leading contributor of plastic waste. Americans buy nearly 50 billion plastic water bottles every year, and more than 60 million of those bottles end up in landfills or the environment daily. According to Greenpeace, less than 5% of household plastic waste in the U.S. gets recycled, and a significant portion ends up in our soils and freshwater. So, while many of us know that plastic waste is a huge environmental issue, it seems like we're still holding onto the habit of buying bottled water.

What’s even more troubling is the health risks tied to bottled water. Recent research from the National Institutes of Health found that bottled water contains up to 240,000 micro- and nanoplastics per liter. That’s up to 100 times more plastic than earlier studies found. So, not only are we contributing to pollution, but we could also be putting ourselves at risk by drinking water contaminated with plastic particles.

The solution: switching to a water filter

The good news? It's easier than ever to ditch single-use plastics.

Aquasana’s high-performance water filters, including our under sink and countertop systems, are designed to remove microplastics and 77 other contaminants from tap water. That’s a huge win for both your health and the planet. With a water filter in place, you can stop buying bottled water and help save the environment — while getting access to better water for your home.

Our Claryum® filtration systems are certified to remove up to 99.6% of microplastics, plus common contaminants like lead, pesticides, bacteria, and more. In fact, using these systems can save up to 12,000 plastic bottles a year, all while ensuring your tap water is as clean as possible.

So, if you're ready to make a change, reduce plastic waste and improve your drinking water with a high-performance Aquasana water filter. It's an easy switch with a big impact.

Let’s make this Earth Day the one where we say goodbye to plastic bottles for good!
