The survey numbers you need to know
One-third of Americans (33%) admit to drinking bottled water every day. Another 23% drink bottled water several times a week. Considering the global crisis around plastic pollution and the rising concerns over the health effects of microplastics, it’s pretty surprising that these habits haven’t changed more by now.
Derek Mellencamp, General Manager of Aquasana, says, “We’ve been conducting surveys regularly for nearly a decade to keep a finger on the pulse of how people really feel about their drinking water, and we’ve seen that public concern over microplastics, in particular, has been climbing over the past few years.”
In fact, in a survey we conducted last year, 83% of Americans told us they were concerned about microplastics. The number of people naming microplastics as their top water concern more than tripled in just one year.
Plastic pollution: The bigger picture
Americans buy nearly 50 billion plastic water bottles every year, and more than 60 million of those bottles end up in landfills or the environment daily. According to Greenpeace, less than 5% of household plastic waste in the U.S. gets recycled, and a significant portion ends up in our soils and freshwater. So, while many of us know that plastic waste is a huge environmental issue, it seems like we're still holding onto the habit of buying bottled water.
What’s even more troubling is the health risks tied to bottled water. Recent research from the National Institutes of Health found that bottled water contains up to 240,000 micro- and nanoplastics per liter. That’s up to 100 times more plastic than earlier studies found. So, not only are we contributing to pollution, but we could also be putting ourselves at risk by drinking water contaminated with plastic particles.

The solution: switching to a water filter
The good news? It's easier than ever to ditch single-use plastics. “It’s clear that people need more education and action when it comes to reducing bottled water consumption,” says Mellencamp. “Installing a water filter at home is a simple, effective way to eliminate the need for bottled water, reduce plastic waste, and get cleaner, healthier drinking water.”
Aquasana’s high-performance water filters, including our under sink and countertop systems, are designed to remove microplastics and 77 other contaminants from tap water. That’s a huge win for both your health and the planet. With a water filter in place, you can stop buying bottled water and help save the environment — while getting access to better water for your home.
